Before I started working in the industry, I thought being a professional writer was all about, well, writing.
I imagined I’d spend my time thinking up new, original ideas, writing scripts for said ideas, and then selling those scripts to the highest bidder.
But most of the time, as a mid-level screenwriter, I’m not writing scripts. Most of the time, my job is just… pitch.
Pitch on open writing assignments (OWAs).
Pitch on rewrites.
Pitch to studios with producers and big pieces of talent attached.
Pitch myself in general meetings.
In normal, non-strike times, I think I spend more time working on pitches than I do writing on actual scripts!
In a recent Tuesday post, I talked all things pitching — how to pitch, how to get the opportunity to pitch, etc. I even shared my full YouTube pitching tutorial, in which I “perform” an actual pitch that I shopped around town a few years ago.
But, in the JULIA HAS NOTES Discord, a writer’s community exclusively for JHS paid subscribers, one of our members said their goal was to finish a pitch deck before the end of the year.
So, I thought it could be helpful to share the physical pitch deck that accompanied the pitch.
